Polymer data
- Polymer databases live in a peculiar universe where identities are
primarily indexed based on reactant. Not structure nor composition nor
reaction per se, but primary reactant.
-
This is how polymer chemists talk and think,
i.e., information about polypropylene is naturally indexed by propylene.
- From an information management POV, this is not ideal and it causes
much confusion, e.g., copolymers are often indexed by multiple reactants,
but not all.
-
It is tempting to reorganize polymer data into a rigorous form.
This could be done by reindexing the data based on reaction
rather than a particular reactant.
-
However, the "primary reactant" organization of polymer data is so prevalent
in the polymer literature that it is probably unreasonable to attempt a
reorganization.
Cross-indexing is likely to be most successful by classification methods,
the result of which could be integratable into the chemical universe.
