Daylight Summer School: Fun and Games

Both St. John's College and Santa Fe in general offer lots of recreation in the summertime. Here are some ideas.
Walking and hiking
St. John's College is nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at 7300', at the southern end of the Rocky Mountains. Many scenic hiking trails begin at or near the college itself. Many more are reachable in a few minutes drive. Nearby Tesuque Peak is at 12,000'.
Mountain biking
Local trails are also suitable for mountain biking, from beginner to expert. Mountain bikes may be rented from several downtown shops, including Palace Bike Rentals, 409 E. Palace Ave., 505-984-2151. The price will be approximately $15/day, and includes helmet and lock (but no oxygen!).
Fishing
Cochiti Lake, the Rio Grande, and the Pecos River are all within 1 hour's drive.
Rock Climbing
White Rock and Cochiti Lake Cliffs are two favorite areas for local rock climbers.
Tennis
There are courts at St. John's and also more nearby.
Golf
Golf courses are available in and near Santa Fe. Clubs can be rented. The two nearest courses are the Santa Fe Country Club on Airport Rd., 471-0601, and the Sanchez Public Course on Caja del Rio, 438-5202.
The Art Scene
There are more art galleries in Santa Fe than gas stations, convenience stores and fast food shacks combined. Art is sold from the sidewalks, the Plaza, at restaurants, flea markets, and from the back of pickups. There is also a modern art museum, Indian art museum, folk art museum, fine art museum, and history and culture museum at the Palace of the Governors. And a flea market north of town with everything from beans to gold.
Hamlet!
St. John's College presents Shakespeare in the Park every summer on campus on an outdoor stage. This year Hamlet will be playing, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights at 7pm. Tickets for seats are available at St. John's, or lawn/open seating is free with a $5 donation requested. Food is served. Arrive early for good lawn seats.
Therapy Smorgasboard
Harper's Index reports that 1 of every 26 Santa Fe residents is a therapist of some sort: shiatzu massage, aromatherapy, rolfing, color and vibration, shamanic herbs, enzymatic allergy treatment, etc. etc. So whether you want an ingrown toenail removed or a past-life regression hypnosis, you've come to the right place. One good place to start is 10,000 Waves Japanese Baths and Health Spa.
