This work started as an experiment when we developed a feasibility study prototype of this application for the Euro MUG in just 3 weeks.  Since then we have been working with an industrial collaborator to build a comprehensive and useful tool.

On thing that we quickly identified is that when operating with Merlin (and other engines) was that we should not restrict ourselves to the client and lots of useful functionality can reside on the middle-tier or even the server.

The extent to which this has succeeded is attributable to (a) the flexibility and suitability of ChemSymphony Beans as software components (b) the open-ness and explicitness of the Daylight API's and (c) good quality requirements and prompt feedback from our industrial collaborator.
