A virtual database is a pseudo database, the data from which resides in "real" databases.
Collections of Data
- Many databases gathered under one "umbrella" virtual database. A single search or lookup will work across all of them.
- Many issues to solve: e.g. compatibility of datatypes, security.
One Database, Several Configurations
- Sub-databases (data of interest to a particular group)
- Configurations for different machines (e.g. small memory vs. large memory).
