Conclusions
It is possible to achieve better data compression ratios than GNU gzip.
Up to 10% better compression (typically 2%-5%) is available, most of which with less than doubling of CPU time.
As CPU to I/O ratios improve the use of high latency compression protocols such as GNU bzip2 may even become applicable.
