The GNU gzip program, developed by Jean-Loup Gailly, is a de facto and Internet standard for data compression.
Developed to be free from the many data compression (Lempel-Ziv) patents.
The implementation contains numerous design decisions, heuristics and tradeoffs that may be reevaluated for alternate non-interactive uses of data compression.
