The characteristics of a traditional "library" are:
- Centralized collection of literature
- Anyone can access material at the library
- Primarily consists of specialized books, references and journals
- Little or no content-based censorship
- Librarian(s) are usually available who understand the organization
- Communication time is inherently slow (months to years)
